What is SEO?
I
t's obvious to some, but I want to define it slightly different. And for our sake, we are assuming you at least built your site correctly! I would like you to think of SEO as "promoting" your web site. And I want you to ask yourself 2 things when promoting your web site...
- 1. Is what I'm doing going to benifit my web site?
- 2. Is what I'm doing on the up and up?
If you can answer yes to the above two questions, then your on track for good SEO. If you answer no, then you're set up for failure... for sure. Getting traffic to your web site isn't rocket science. Although analyzing a web sites' stats sometimes feels like it is! It's simply a matter of doing all the right things... more or less in the right order.
The first place to start, especially for a local businesses, is having your web site url (www.yourbizname.com) printed on your business cards, staionary, invoices, receipts, vehicles, etc. Get it? So many dont! If you want others to take your web site seriously, you should too.
Next thing to do would to go and grab your free business page from google, yep, free to every local business owner. Get that page put together correctly and your half the way done with SEO for a local business web site. Get it wrong, and you just won't see any benifit at all to listing your business there.
L
astly, well not really last, but the end all be all of SEO is getting links back to your web site from other sites. This can be accomplished in many ways. However, it is worth mentioning here that the NUMBER 1 way to get links is naturally. Meaning your content, your business, your employees(etc,) are so good that others just want to link to you out of "respect" or admiration for what you are offering or what it is that you do. Getting links from other sites is a whole long story and many folks have their "methods", but it is a long and tedious process to do...that's for sure. In fact, it NEVER stops. Believe this...your competition isn't stopping. However, it goes without saying that the rewards are worth the efffort! If you don't, your'e leaving lots and lots of money on the table.
